The 3 Major Types of Leaks to Know About

We’re plumbing professionals in North Olmsted. As such, it’s important that we inform all our customers (and potential customers) about a common plumbing problem that can cause a lot of stress: leaks. Leaks might all sound like bad news, but we’d like to talk about the different types of leaks and why your solution might have to change depending on what’s going on in your home.

For instance, when there’s a pinhole leak in your plumbing in North Olmsted, OH, you might not notice it right away. In fact, many homes are plagued with tiny leaks that are virtually undetectable. That’s why having a team of experienced master plumbers on hand is the first step towards fixing your leaks.

Leaks come in all shapes and sizes, so we’re here to help you prepare for them. Let’s get into the three major types of leaks and how you might go about having them fixed.

Gushing Leaks

When you close your eyes and picture a plumbing leak, you’re probably imagining a gushing leak. These are usually the leaks in cartoons and in movies that are as severe as they come. One of the most common ways they occur is when one of your larger plumbing pipes bursts during the winter. It’s leaking tons of water, it’s getting everywhere, and you’re unsure of what to do.

First, turn off the water in your home. This is the best first step because it’s going to limit the amount of water that can physically leak from your pipes. Without water to leak, it’s just a big hole that needs to be fixed, which is a lot easier to deal with.

Once that’s done, call our team for help and start mopping up the remaining water. This will require lots of towels and any other cleaning supplies to make sure there’s no residual water.

Medium Leaks

Medium leaks are more common than the others because they can really be any size. If your toilet is starting to leak, your drain is leaking into your basement, or anything along those lines, then you’re probably dealing with a medium-sized leak.

Luckily, the damages won’t be as bad as when you’re dealing with a burst pipe or a gushing leak. You’ll still need professional help, so make sure you call our team when you encounter this kind of problem.

Pinhole Leaks

Pinhole leaks are insidious and rarer than the others, but they still happen on a regular basis. Due to either corrosion, wear and tear, or pressure, a tiny hole can develop in your pipes. That hole can be the size of a needle, which is one of the hardest things to detect as a homeowner.

Similarly, they leak in droplets which means you might not hear them like you would another leak. Gushing leaks can be obvious to hear and see, while pinhole leaks are quiet and hard to find.

Turn off all your water-using appliances in your home and check your water meter. If you notice that it still shows your home using water, you’re likely dealing with a pinhole leak that needs a professional to fix it.
