Schedule Furnace Repair Now, Before Next Fall

furnace-repair-serviceThe coming of spring usually sees homeowners using their heaters less and less often until they finally turn them off until next fall. Now is the ideal time to schedule repairs on any problems you may have. Doing so can save you effort when the weather starts to cool again at the end of summer, as well as ensuring that your furnace is ready to go on the first day you need it. It can be easy to keep the system running in the face of an obvious problem, but with winter now behind us, any lingering issues with your furnace should probably be dealt with.

Servicing Makes a Lot of Sense

If youโ€™re not sure whether or not your heater needs repairs, the best thing you can do is schedule regular heating maintenance from a qualified professional. The technician will look your furnace over thoroughly and check for any difficulties. If the trouble is small (a clogged burner, for example, which is a common problem late in the season), the technician can fix it as part maintenance. If further repairs are required, they can be identified immediately, and you and schedule them at your leisure. Either way, your system will perform more efficiently next winter with the care provided by regular heating maintenance: helping to cut down on those high monthly heating bills.

Look for Problems Yourself

If you think you have a problem with your furnace, you might want to simply skip the regular maintenance and call for repairs. While you should never attempt to diagnose a heating problem yourself, there are a number of common symptoms of serious trouble that recur over a number of problems. You can check for these problems simply by turning on your heating system and letting it run for 15 to 20 minutes. They can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Short Cycling, or turning on and off rapidly multiple times throughout the day without running for more than a few minutes at a clip.
  • Low Air Flow, which means air that isnโ€™t coming out of the vents with the speed you expect. One easy way to do this is to tie lengths of ribbon to the vents and watch to see if they donโ€™t flutter as high as they normally would.
  • Low Heat Levels, or air that emerges from the vents which isnโ€™t as warm as you expect.
  • Strange Noises, which can mean anything you donโ€™t recognize as a normal part of the heaterโ€™s functioning. In most cases, the noises will start and stop in time with the starting and the stopping of the heater.
  • Higher Bills, if bills seemed to rise unexpectedly this winter, despite the fact that you havenโ€™t used your heating system any more often than normal.

If you detect any of these symptoms, shut the heating system off and call in a good repair service immediately.
