Don’t Wait for a Breakdown to Call for Furnace Repair

Air Conditioning Services - Westland HVAC + Plumbing

furnace-repair-serviceHeating season is well underway and temperatures are going to get a lot colder as winter approaches. You’ve likely been using your furnace for some time now, and soon enough you’ll be using it every day. Heating is far more than a luxury in our neck of the woods, and if yours is having a problem, you need to get it treated right away. It can make a great difference not only in terms of getting the repairs made in a timely fashion, but in the costs involved as well.

Unfortunately, most homeowners tend to wait until the system breaks down before calling in repairs. We all have busy lives to lead, and the immediate pressures of work and family can often take priority over something like the heating system. Unfortunately, this can be an expensive mistake. You shouldn’t wait for the system to flat-out stop working before recognizing a problem and calling in a repair service.

Why Not?

In the first case, waiting on a problem with your furnace means that the damage has time to spread that will raise the cost of repairs considerably, as well as increasing the time it may take to conduct repairs. Furthermore, if you wait until later in the season to deal with repairs, you’re apt to be more greatly inconvenienced, since the weather is going to get a lot colder before it gets any warmer. Attending to repair issues now means you can rest easy when the winter begins in earnest, as well as potentially saving you a great deal of money on the cost.

What Kinds of Signs to Watch For

You should never attempt to formally diagnose a heating problem without proper training and licensing. Heaters contain gas pipes and other components that can be dangerous if tampered with. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t spot the signs of a problem in your unit and turn off the system when you do. You’ve likely run your heater fairly often already. During the next week or so, when you turn your system on, look for the following issues:

  • Low Heat Levels. You probably know that something is wrong if only cold air comes out of the system. But the same problems occur if the air is warm, just not as warm as you expect. It will force the system to work harder then it should, increasing monthly bills and the strain on other components.
  • Low Air Flow. Low air flow can be caused by a blockage in the ducts, a breach in the system somewhere, or a problem with the fan mechanism (most often the fan motor). It causes the same problems as low heat levels–forcing your system to work harder than it should–but it also creates issues by keeping hot air in the system (which can cause other components to overheat).
  • Strange Noises. Most problems with your furnace will be accompanied by odd noises: anything from hums to whistles to clangs. In most cases, they will start and stop with the starting and the stopping of your furnace.
