Detecting a Leak in Your Boiler

Commercial HVAC - Westland HVAC + Plumbing

Boilers rely on the power of heater water—steam—to provide heat for your home. It’s a simple and reliable system and has served many residents of Westlake, OH quite well for many years. One of the biggest repair calls involving boilers comes from leaks: a fitting between the pipes or sometimes the pipe themselves becoming corroded enough to let the water slip out. Leaks can be very hard to spot, especially with pinhole leaks where the water escapes slowly as steam and rarely leaves telltale puddles. But they need to be addressed because they run the risk of damaging your home, as well as preventing your boiler from properly doing its job. A good plumbing service can correct the problem, but first you need to determine if your boiler actually has a leak. Here are some simple tips to help you do that.

Look for Corrosion Stains

Corrosion is a sure sign that a leak is either occurring or will occur in the near future. They can be tough to notice, but you should check the piping and other components in your boiler for signs of rust or similar corrosion. A plumber can usually repair light rusting or replace the affected pipe before the leak gets too bad.

Monitor the Cold Water Pressure

This method is a little time consuming, but can be very effective is applied right. Turn off your boiler and check the cold pressure gauge, which can usually be found on the boiler’s central unit. If there’s a leak, the gauge will slowly drop over a period of days or weeks, giving you a sure sign that something is amiss with your system.

The solution to any boiler leak is to call the pros at Westland Heating and Air to handle the issue properly the right way, every time!
