5 Electrical Problems That Require Air Conditioning Repair

Water Softeners - Westland HVAC + Plumbing

electricians-inspecting-circuit-breaker-panelYou discover one day that your air conditioner isnโ€™t working. Uh oh.

If youโ€™ve read our blog before, youโ€™ll know that we like to cover common AC repair issues and their causes, and you may think to first look into those issues. However, even if you diligently change your air filter, check your evaporator coils for ice, and see no indication of a refrigerant leak, you might still have an AC repair problem you canโ€™t locate. In that case, it could be a problem thatโ€™s much harder to spot: an electrical problem.

Of course, we do not recommend attempting to fix any of your own electrical problems. We recommend nothing short of enlisting the help of a certified professional. Theyโ€™ll be able to go through their checklist of all the potential electrical problems and know how to safely handle them. As they go through that checklist, they might find:

1. Burnt Out Fan Motor

Does it sound like your air conditionerโ€™s working, but youโ€™re not receiving any air flow? A broken fan motor could be to blame. Both the outdoor fan and the indoor fan are required to blow hot or cool air away from their coilsโ€”an important part of the air conditioning process. If either of these fans has expired, that process wonโ€™t be completed, and it could lead to air flow issues.

2. Blown Start or Run Capacitor

Capacitors are like batteries; their purpose is to store energy and use it for power-intensive processes. The start capacitor uses a burst of energy to get the AC started. And the run capacitor, as its name suggests, stores energy to help keep the system running. Both capacitors are necessary for operation and could be the cause of your AC problems.

3. Tripped Circuit Breaker

A malfunction in your air conditioner might have tripped the circuit breaker. Of course, you simply have to flip the switch to get it back running, but you should never ignore the reason for why it tripped in the first place. It may be a simple issue that takes a couple of minutes to fix, but it could just as easily be something much worse. Have it checked out by an air conditioning repair service in Avon, OH if it repeatedly trips.

4. Wire Issues

Over time, wires can become weakened and damagedโ€”and this can be due to any number of reasons, from wear and tear, to an amateur repair job, or power outages. Damaged wires can cause shorting or disconnects that might be responsible for your AC issues.

5. Fuse Problems

If youโ€™ve had your AC recently repaired by a handyman or an amateur, they could have installed the wrong fuses in the system. Or, if itโ€™s been a while since the system has been maintained and cleaned, dust and debris may be interfering with the fuseโ€™s connection.

Do you have an air conditioning problem you just canโ€™t figure out? You donโ€™t have to do it on your ownโ€”thatโ€™s why weโ€™re here. Contact Westland Heating & Air Conditioning today.
